FDA Now Says Rotavirus Vaccines Safe

If you have plans to travel soon, you may also have plans to get the rotavirus vaccine. There has been recent speculation as to wheather or not both vaccines for the virus were contaminated. The Food and Drug Administartion (FDA) has just recently announced that both vaccines are safe.

There are two vaccines out there for the rotavirus currently: Rotateq and Rotarix. The FDA recently found out that the Rotarix shot contained small amounts of a pig virus. They advised using the Rotatex vaccine instead, believing it to be pure. Later, Rotateq was also found to contain trace amounts of a pig virus. No one knew how this contamination may have happened.

Both vaccines have now been declared to be safe by the FDA, and are recommended to prevent the rotavirus. It has been stated by the FDA that the pig virus in the vaccine can not hurt people. Vaccines for the rotavirus has been shown to prevent gastroenterititis. This disease can case severe dehydration, as well as diarrhea. This can be very deadly to children. Medical experts believe that vaccines against the rotavirus has the potential to save million of lives through the next 10 years. There has been much evidence reported in the past year by scientists that the vaccines are very effective. Consult your doctor to decide if these vaccines are right for you.

A variety of vaccines may be necessary for people planning to travel internationally. Travelers should not be nervous about the quality of the vaccinations. There is a very high standard of quality control that vaccines are subjected to. Nothing is 100% pure. Although there are risks that come with every medication or vaccine, the risks are far lower then the risks of not receiving the vaccine.

The term “contaminated” may very well spook travelers, and maybe should be avoided. The phrase “inert ingredients” may be more appropriate. To put it in perspective, I personally would ingest an inert pig virus gladly, rather then deal with the joy of acute gastroenteritis. I am a gastroenterologist, and I know how bad this disease can be.
